My 5 Essential Ingredients for Writing

Thanks for having me visit, Brynn. It’s great to be here again. J

Recently I was asked a question about the “things” I needed to enable me to write, so I thought I’d share these with you. There’s no particularly order to the list, but these are the things that help me keep the words flowing (and for an author, that’s a very good thing!)

  • Technology

I’m a big user of technology, whether it’s for the simple act of capturing the words, or most complex tasks of outlining and refining the story. I have software for brainstorming/mind mapping, software to create and manage timelines, and software for writing the actual chapters and scenes. I pin in Pinterest and create notes in Evernote. Google is my friend. If I had to go back to pen and paper, I don’t think I’d get a single story written, and even if I did, my handwriting is so bad, you probably wouldn’t be able to read it anyway *wink*

  • Inspiration

Inspiration for a story can come from anywhere – a song lyric, a photo, a discussion about current affairs, a dream… My characters are inspired by people I’ve glimpsed on the street, or a photo of gorgeous a movie star. I’ve seen people struggling and horrible situations, which have prompt me to want to tell a story. Basically, inspiration is everywhere. I’m in the lucky situation of having lots of ideas for books I want to write. My ideas are recorded in Evernote so I don’t lose track of those plot bunnies that keep me awake at night.

  • Time

Don’t most people wish for an additional hour or two in their day? If I had this extra time, it would be spent writing. As I mentioned, I have a long list of story ideas. I’ve tried making a schedule, and at my current writing rate, I think I have enough to be writing non-stop for the next 5 years! Like most authors, I juggle the demands of a busy life, including raising two teenage daughters, and it can be difficult to keep the balls in the air. And even if I find the time to write, I’m constantly interrupted. Someone always wants something, or kids are coming and going, or dinner needs to be made, or hubby can’t find his keys, or my sister wants to chat on the phone, or music is blaring throughout the house. Sound familiar? J Oh, for a little peace and quiet. #keepondreamingitsnevergonnahappen

  • Sustenance

I sure this list is familiar – coffee in the morning, tea in the evening, chocolate any time of the day. Chocolate of choice? Dark chocolate, preferably 70%. At a push, a Tim Tam (I am an Aussie, after all). I also keep a constant supply of apples on my desk.

  • Comfort

I can’t write unless I’m comfortable. This means I don my writing uniform – because it’s winter, I’m wearing trackies, T-shirt and ugg boots. The air-conditioning is on to keep the house warm (yes, I know, I should be wearing a jumper and trying to save on the electricity bills), and my dog is curled at my feet. All is right in my world. J

Have a great day!

Nic xx

And for those of you interested, here are the details of my latest release J

Charlie’s Hero

Blurb

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that he doesn’t need his parents to be part of a family.
